The Electric Fence

An electric fence has many advantages over a conventional fence. Electric fencing consists of an electrical device, a conductor, posts, insulators and earthing.

An electric fence is a closed loop system. Using an energizer to provide power, which travels around via the wire (or cord or tape depending on your preference). When an animal like a horse or pony comes into contact with the electric fence they get a safe, but noticeable shock. As a result the animal will then see the fence as a barrier and will stay away from the fence.

What happens to the electric current / power once the animal has touched the fence?

After an animal has made contact with the fence, the power will be transmitted from the animal and return via the earth rods of the earthing system to the energizer. Proper earthing by professionals is very important as the power has to be able to flow back to the energizer in order to keep the loop system closed.

If the earthing system is not adequate, the closed loop system will be unreliable.

It is essential to ensure the electric fencing is properly fitted for it to function correctly, and above all safely.

About Electric Fencing

Used to deter both animals and people from crossing a certain boundary, electric fencing is often used in agricultural stock fencing and in enhancing the security of sensitive areas such as military institutions and prisons. The primary function of an electric fence is to complete an electrical circuit when touched by a person or animal.

The range of an electric fence depends on its purpose, but it can range from a small tingle to painful and lethal levels. The fence is often made from smooth steel wire in a range of thickness. You can also find fences with synthetic webbing and conducting wires of stainless steel which has become popular in the last few decades as they are more visible.

It is important to keep an electrified fence insulated from the earth and from any materials that conduct electricity and may short out the fence, or ignite and cause a safety hazards. They cannot be directly attached to wood or metal posts and are often used in conjunction with plastic or porcelain insulators.

Electric Fencing can also be used to divide grazing areas, making it ideal for agricultural purposes and for farming. Larger fields can be divided up using electric fencing or electrical tape, effectively sectioning off horses and farmyard animals.
